大倉道昌　ŌKURA Michimasa

Depicted is the townscape of Semur-en-Auxois, located roughly midway between Paris and Geneva, Switzerland. It may be a park, but the town seen through the trees appears to be a winter scene, yet the added warm colors make it feel not very cold. The outlines are primarily blue, and besides that, black, ochre, and other colors are used according to each motif, treated so as not to be jarring. The year this work was painted, Okura had been in France for 15 years. His view of the town is not that of a foreigner, but one that conveys a sense of familiarity.
