海老原喜之助 EBIHARAK Kinosuke
Snowy Mountains

Although the production year of this work is not explicitly stated, the so-called Ebihara Blue series of works was created exclusively during Ebihara Kiyonosuke's active period in Paris around 1930. At that time, Ebihara sought “expressions possible precisely because he was Japanese” in painting 'Western-style paintings.' He limited almost all colors to blue and white, applied tonal techniques reminiscent of Eastern ink wash paintings to oil painting, and depicted snowy landscapes in his own unique expression. The resulting translucent blue was praised by the people of Paris as 'Ebihara Blue.'
