片岡真太郎 KATAOKA Shintarō
Opera

As the title suggests, it might be a scene from an opera. The shoulders and arms of the woman in the red dress are stiff like a doll, and if that is the case, it can also remind one of the mechanical doll that Hoffmann fell in love with at the beginning of Offenbach's "The Tales of Hoffmann." The overall haziness and indefinability of the canvas, rather, attracts the viewer. Light falls on the woman's head, and the brightness on the side of her head uses the exposed white ground of the canvas, and that emptiness again piques interest.
