OYAMADA Jirō
Night(Crucifixion)

In the late 1950s, Oyamada Jiro painted several works depicting people crucified, such as this one. Some of them evoke Christ, while others address the Pietà, but it is unclear whether this work depicts Christ as a saint. The head appears to be a hybrid of an animal and a demon, giving it a magical feel.Furthermore, the cross has a texture with scratches that resemble a red curtain, obscuring the situation behind it.Is Oyamada deliberately tackling expressions that create anxiety as to what is being depicted and evoke primordial sensations?
