中山巍 NAKAYAMA Takashi

わずかに草が生える荒涼とした大地に割れた土器が転がっている。空は青く、雲が中央やや下に浮かんでいる。景色から推測すると日本ではなく中山がかつて訪れたギリシャやイタリアあたりかもしれない。それぞれの形態がしっかりと描かれていながらぼやけて見える不思議な世界はエルグレコに通じるものがあり、想像力を掻き立てる。中山は1955（昭和30）年の第23回独立展に《出土器など》を出品しており、本作はその作品との関連性がありそうだが、キャンヴァスがそれほど古くなく、もう少し後の時代に描いたものと思われる。

A broken piece of pottery lies on the desolate ground, barely covered with grass. The sky is blue, with clouds floating slightly below the center. Judging from the scenery, it may not be Japan, but perhaps Greece or Italy, places Nakayama once visited. The mysterious world, in which each form is clearly depicted yet appears blurred, is reminiscent of El Greco and stimulates the imagination.Nakayama exhibited "Excavated Vessels, etc." at the 23rd Independent Exhibition in 1955, and this work seems to be related to that work, but the canvas is not particularly old and is thought to have been painted at a slightly later date.
