田中保 TANAKA Yasushi
Near Pontoise

Yasushi Tanaka moved to Paris in 1920 and was establishing himself as a painter by exhibiting at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants. The gentle light on the Oise River and the hazy colors of the distant hills depicted in this work suggest that Tanaka, in his early days in France, keenly perceived and depicted the humidity of the atmosphere and the diffusion of light. Although Tanaka is known for his nudes, his landscape paintings also demonstrate a delicate sensibility and European-style color treatment, making this a valuable example that reveals his approach to painting during his early Paris period.
