ASAI Kan'emon
Painting studio

When World War II ended in Shanghai, Asai inherited two tenement houses in Yokosuka City adjacent to his home from Ishimori Shigero, a patient at the clinic run by Fukushima Noboru, a friend from his time in Shanghai. He lived here for about 20 years, using half the space as a residence and the other half as a studio. This period was the peak of his artistic career and is usually called the Tamura period after the name of the town, and this work is believed to have been painted during that time. Although it is a sketch-like work, it shows a precise depiction of the movement, capturing light and shade and shapes.
