Naples and Mount Vesuvius

BEPPU Kan-ichiro

There are holes in each of the four corners of the painting, suggesting that the canvas was attached to some kind of drawing board with thumb tacks. The image of the building reflected in the sea and the blue lines that cancel out the reflection and express the water surface are skillfully expressed. The way the cacti and other plants are depicted in the foreground may have been intended to create an ukiyo-e style of expression. As this was a work of the Kokugakai, the influence of Umehara Ryuzaburo was of course also present. "This painting is a view from Posillipo Hill, which towers over the fishing port of Mergellina on the outskirts of Naples. It was painted in about two hours, with almost no traffic jams, in the order of sky, mountains, part of the town, sea, and vegetation in the foreground."
