IHARA Usaburo

Moodon, outskirts of Paris

IHARA Usaburo

The restaurant is captured in the center, even depicting the writing on the wall. The tree in the foreground is painted with brush strokes reminiscent of a sumi-e painting, prioritizing atmosphere over three-dimensionality.The depiction of the windows has also been simplified, and the overall work strongly reflects the paintings of Vlaminck and Yuzo Saeki.During the early years of his study abroad in Paris, Usaburo Ihara had contact with Yuzo Saeki, and although the year of production of this work is unknown, it is likely to have been from that period. After the Second World War, Usaburo Ihara produced many portraits that were heavily influenced by Picasso, but the uniqueness of his expression is undoubtedly due to the training he gained in his early days, which placed emphasis on materiality.
