KAWASHIMA Riichiro

Kawashima was sent to northern China twice as a war painter, in 1938 and the following year.This work is thought to have been painted during a visit to the Forbidden City.The large tower on the right side of the screen is the "corner tower," a defensive lookout facility.On the left you can see the Palace Museum.The idyllic scene at dusk, with small boats floating in the moat, gives no sense of the impending war.
