Trying to fill the gap...

It's frustrating to see a shape that gives you some kind of clue, but not be able to figure it out. The brush strokes seem like they might provide a clue, but the clue never comes. It is unclear whether the artist intended to create a composition that seems to invite a sense of emptiness, but it does not seem to be an entirely negative or pessimistic expression. The title of this work, "Trying to Fill the Gap" is also the title of a solo exhibition held at the Formes Gallery in Ginza in December 1954. This work dates from a turning point in the artist's career, when his solo exhibitions began to be given titles and concrete elements such as human figures disappeared from his paintings.
