TSUBAKI Sadao
Portrait of Haruko

It depicts his own daughter, his third daughter, Haruko. The figure holding a camellia in its hand shows the strong influence of Ryusei's Northern Renaissance paintings, but the depiction of wide-open eyes is not characteristic of Ryusei's work, and it may be that the artist was influenced by Moise Kisling. The light from the window is depicted in the eyes, showing great attention to detail. This portrait was likely painted in a room with the daughter facing the light. Since 3,000 other works in his home were destroyed in an air raid in 1945, this is one of the few remaining pieces from before World War II.
